Together with New York and Paris, Rome is one of the most photographed cities in the world. Going around in the city, it’s not difficult to understand why. Famous views, iconic architecture and picturesque piazzas offer plenty of great photo opportunities. And then not to speak about the life on the streets … this is a sort of wonderland for street shooters!
This gallery is a modest attempt to give a new vision of Rome, its citizens and its life on the streets.
If you look at Salgado’s black and white-images, you’ll know that everything can be shot in black and white. If you dwell over Vivian Meyer’s black and white photos – and how is it possible not to dwell over those wonderful captures??? – you’ll see that so much emotion can be captured in black and white images. These were just two b&w-shooters, but there are many others.
In this gallery I have deliberately mixed styles and genres. You’ll find views that are usually seen in colors, turned into black and white. And you’ll find people on the street – playing, resting, sleeping, doing strange and funny things.
It’s not exactly a big secret that Italy is a country in deep crisis – economically, politically and morally. It has been for many years, and it will be in years to come. The rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, and the social system is practically absent. This is reflected in the streets of Rome where you’ll find beggars, hustlers of any kind, homeless people, musicians trying to make a living, people looking for food and stuff in waste bins and even people – well, actually an aged guy from Romania – juggling with a football in the Prati neighborhood, trying to make some hard-earned money.
I’d like to make this gallery an ongoing process. So hopefully, if I find time, energy and interesting subjects the gallery will keep growing.
