The name Monti probably has a magic sound to many Romans, like when you think of a sweet secret. Despite the fact that mass tourism's has long invade and "conquered" the Italian capital, the Monti neighborhood - squeezed down between the Quirinal area and the Coliseum - still seems to be a well-kept secret, far less known that for example Trastevere. Monti seems to be a small town within the city with its own small-town-atmosphere. The area's many cobbled roads and narrow streets definitely contribute to give the neighborhood a charming and romantic imprint. Add to this, small cozy shops, charming facades swept in "creative decay" and in certain places totally covered with climbing plants ... then you have Monti.
With an age way above 2,000 years Monti is supposedly Rome's oldest neighborhood. Once, is was simply regarded to be the home area of ... whores and pickpockets! Since then, considerable quantities of water have passed under the bridges of the Tiber, an its scoundrel reputation is long gone. Today, Monti is vintage trendy and home to wine bars and eateries of any kind.
